The Invisible Man goes underground. In the short story “Geese” in Drinking Coffee Elsewhere Dina, after her difficult experience at Yale University, leaves America for Japan. Referring to the Prologue and Epilogue of Ellison’s novel and the “Geese” story in general, compare and contrast the departures of these two characters. Is one or both of them giving up? Are they retreating in an irresponsible and cowardly fashion? Or is one or both characters making a sane, responsible and correct decision that will help them better understand themselves and the world they live in?

The exit of both characters including Ras the Exhorter and Dr. Bledsoe is seen as driven by the desire to stand out for their feelings. It cannot be considered as an act of cowardly fashion.
