U‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍nit 1 Individual Project Information about Assignment Case Study:

Problem 1 US Rail-Adel, LLC started as a small company offering only one product to sell to the railroad industry. It depends on a spreadsheet system to get its work done. But this company has been growing very fast. Currently, it has more than nine products, spare parts, and a few services to sell to railroad companies. As a company grows, the amount of data needed also grows, including new products, services, marketing, investments, sales, and other systems to support growth. The chief executive officer (CEO) and chief information officer (CIO) realized that the current system has several problems, including that it is time-consuming and labor-intensive to set up and maintain, there is insufficient collaboration and feedback capabilities, and there is inadequate analysis and reporting. For that reason, the CIO suggested building a new business intelligence system (BIS). The essential problem is that US Rail-Adel, LLC does not have enough expert information technology (IT) people in place who have the ability to define the BIS boundaries and requirements in various areas, including marketing, customer relationship management (CRM), enterprise logistics and operations, cost, and time frame limitations. Business Intelligence Systems Project Plan Document Throughout this course, you will be working on several aspects of planning for a business intelligence system that will result in a complete Business Intelligence Systems Project Plan document for a company of your choosing. You will not actually be performing the implementation of the system, but you will work extensively with the concepts of good business intelligence system design practices. Additional information and the deliverables for each Individual Project will be provided in the assignment description for the project. This is the course’s Key Assignment that you will make contributions to each week. Project Selection The first step will be to select an organization as the target for your business intelligence system plan. This organization will be used as the basis for each of the assignments throughout the course and should conform to the following guidelines: Nontrivial: The selected organization should be large enough to allow reasonable exercise of the business intelligence system planning process. Domain knowledge: You should be familiar enough with the organization to allow focus on the planning tasks without significant time required for domain education. Accessibility: You should have good access to the people and other information related to the organization, because this will be an important part of the planning process. Note: The selected organization may already have a business intelligence system in place, which may be used as the basis for the projects in this course. Select an organization that fits these requirements, and submit your proposal to your instructor before proceeding further with the assignments in the course. Approval should be sought within the first several days of the course. Your instructor will tell you how to submit this proposal and what notification will be given for project approval. Assignment For the assignments in this course, you will not be performing the business intelligence system implementation; rather, you will be developing a comprehensive Business Intelligence Systems Project Plan document and using a business intelligence tool to create reports demonstrating the type of data that will be used for business intelligence. Task 1: Your first task in this process will be to select an organization to use as the basis of your projects, identify at least 3 company goals, and identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) of the selected company. Task 2: Create the shell document for the final project deliverable that you will be working on during each unit. As you proceed through each project phase, you will add content to each section of the final document to gradually complete the final project deliverable. Appropriate research should be conducted to support the analysis in your plan, and assumptions may be made when necessary. The project deliverables are as follows: Submit the organization proposal to your instructor for approval. Business Intelligence Systems Project Plan document shell Use Word Title page Course number and name Project name Your name Date Table of Contents (TOC) Use an autogenerated TOC. This should be on a separate page. This should be a maximum of 3 levels deep. Be sure to update the fields of the TOC so that it is up-to-date before submitting your project. Section Headings (create each heading on a new page with “TBD” as content, except for Week 1) Week 1: Project Outline and Requirements, Company Goals, and SWOT Week 2: Application and System Evaluation Week 3: Application and System Recommendation Week 4: Analysis Methods Week 5: Principles and Practices Week 5: Implementation Plan Create the following section for Week 1: Week 1: Project Outline and Requirements, Company Goals, and SWOT Give a brief description of the company (can be hypothetical) where the system will be deployed. Include a list of products and services provided by the company and the company’s size, locations, and other pertinent information. Specify the company goals. Summarize the company SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats). Give a summary of the requirements for the system in the areas of marketing, customer relationship management (CRM), and enterprise logistics, and operations. Include any constraints such as cost or time frame limitations. Material can be taken from the approved proposal submitted to your instructor. Be sure that this project ‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍is approved by the instructor. Name the document “yourname_IT622_IP1.doc.” Worked Example Please refer to the Worked Example that follows for an example of this assignment based on the Problem-Based Learning Scenario. The worked example is not intended to be a complete example of the assignment, but it will illustrate the basic concepts that are required for completion of the assignment, and it can be used as a general guideline for your own project. Your assignment submission should be more detailed and specific and should reflect your own approach to the assignment rather than just following the same outline provided in the worked example.
