T‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍heme: Connecting the Past with the Present—(Minimum 5 pages, double spaced, 11 font, regular margins, work cited page,MLA format ) Studying history can often seem distant and disconnected from the present.

What do events/people that had some relevance 50, 100, or 1,000 years ago have today, in my time and place?

In a word: everything. From the technology we use, the products we consume, social conflicts we observe, or the places we live, all are rooted in the past by events/ideas/ and people that continue to shape our reality and present condition. To borrow a relevant quote, “

The past(history) is never dead. It’s not even past”(William Faulkner) We’ve studied different periods in ancient to modern Western(European/American) Civilization this semester.

We’ve looked at different themes in our units that make up the study‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍ of history: society(culture, gender, class), economics(trade), political developments, religion, migration, geography, military campaigns, imperialism/colonialism, technology(innovations/inventions).

Your task will be to write a paper that focuses on one of these themes. You will write a thematic paper that connects a topic of your choosing from today with one of the topics covered this semester. How are they related?

 What was their impact?

What are the influences of past events or ideas, on the present?

You are essentially comparing and contrasting current events with the past. You should have a clear thesis statement in your introduction paragraph that is supported by the rest of the paper.

You need to include at least three outside sources in your paper(not including your textbook), in-text citations and a work cited at the end ‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍of the paper.
