Core Democratic Values The Core Democratic Values are the basic American cultural beliefs that provide the underpinnings of our democracy and protect the individual’s rights. The Core Democratic Values are the fundamental beliefs and constitutional principles of the American society. They unite all Americans. These values are expressed in the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, and other significant documents, speeches and writings of the nation.
The Core Democratic Values are: Life, Liberty, Pursuit of Happiness, The Common Good, Justice, Equality, Diversity, Truth and Open and Free Inquiry, Popular Sovereignty, and Patriotism. Not only is it important that citizens understand their own rights, but that they also understand that by acting for the common good, they protect the rights of all individuals from unconstitutional abuses by the government. To learn more about the Core Democratic Values, students will be assigned one core democratic value to investigate and write about. Students are to identify two current pieces of evidence related to the Core Democratic Value.
The evidences can be articles from newspapers, magazines or valid Internet websites. The first piece of evidence must exemplify the Core Democratic Value The second piece must show how the Core Democratic Value may be in jeopardy Students will write a paper describing the Core Democratic Value. The first section of the paper must include a description of the Core Democratic Value and includes a summary of each of the current evidences. The second section must explain why the Core Democratic Value is ‘alive and kicking’- that is – visible within our country. The third section must explain why the Core Democratic Value is in jeopardy.

Give examples The fifth section must include the student’s personal response to the evidences and the Core Democratic Value. Explain how this value applies to you personally and how you have witnessed or experienced it in your own life Remember to use APA formatting when citing the evidences Attach copies or active links for each evidence. A template is provided on the Moodle course page for students to use as they develop their Core Democratic Value paper. The Core Democratic Value paper will be assessed using the attached scoring criteria. Students will share what they learned about their Core Democratic Value with their classmates.
