You are expected to demonstrate that you have met the brief of the assignment and the learning outcomes through the submission of an essay (3500) words.

An essay discussing pedagogy and curriculum in the early years

These learning outcomes need to be demonstrated in your assignment:

  1. Critically analyse aspects of early childhood curricula in relation to theories of learning and pedagogy and relate this to practice in their settings
  2. Describe, analyse and constructively critique a range of perspectives on early childhood education in this and some other countries
  3. Identify the relationship between the history of early childhood provision in the UK and its present form
  4. Articulate the practitioner’s role in planning and implementing a broad and balanced, child-centred curriculum indoors, outdoors and beyond the early childhood setting

Every essay must be written in paragraphs (see below for more explanation.)
Introduction Give the aim of the essay.  What will you discuss in your essay? State your argument.  Indicate how you will answer the question (say what you are going to say).

Introductory Paragraph

Define any terms you will be using in the essay, here you will briefly define the two key terms relevant to the module: pedagogy and curriculum, linking your definitions to academic reading.
Main Body of the essay  Develops your argument point by point.  Put forward the reasons that support the argument you declared in your initial introduction.

1st Main Point

●       One of your first tasks as part of the module was defining ‘pedagogy’ with reference to academic literature, research and practice.  Draw on your previous writing (and feedback given) to define this key terms in depths.

●       An explanation/example from practice helps to illustrate the theory you use and will show your understanding of the term.

2nd Main Point

●       In your first hand-in task you have also defined ‘curriculum’ with reference to academic literature, research and practice.  Draw again on your previous writing (and feedback given) to define this key term in depths.●       An explanation/example from practice helps to illustrate the theory you use and will show your understanding of the term.

3rd Main Point

●       Now you could discuss ways of seeing the child linked to the pioneers and their underpinning philosophical ideas.  How have particular pioneers influenced your own approach to early childhood education?  How have they influenced and shaped both the pedagogical model you use and the curriculum that has been developed in your setting?●       Integrate an explanation/example from practice to help illustrate the theories you draw from.

4th Main Point

●       You could discuss how learning theories (link these to the learning theorists) inform and shape both the pedagogical model you use and the curriculum and the view of the child that has been developed in your setting.  .●       Integrate an explanation/example from practice to help illustrate the theories you draw from.

5th Main Point

●       Critique learning theorists by drawing on postmodern theory●       Explanation/example from practice to help develop your argument.

6th Main Point

●       Discuss curriculum models from this and other countries.  Discuss at least two but no more than three curriculum models.  Remember a ‘curriculum model’ is the documentation or approach, for example the EYFS is a curriculum whereas Reggio is an approach that informs your practice in a particular context.●       Integrate examples from practice to help illustrate the models or approaches you discuss.
7th Main Point ●       Compare and contrast the curriculum models. Draw out how the models you have chosen differ and the underlying theories which have influenced the curriculum models / approach(es). Make links to reading to support your arguments / critique of the curriculum models.
Conclusion

Every essay needs a conclusion that briefly summarises what has been said in the essay.

Concluding paragraph

Summarise the reasons that support your argument, with no new information. Remind the reader what you have covered and how you have addressed the brief.
