Critically discuss the theories and/or principles you have learnt in the chapters on middle and late childhood (e.g., the physical, cognitive, and socioemotional development).

In this assignment, you are required to understand and apply the issues and principles covered in the chapters on middle and late childhood development.

Your task is to find out the experiences of two (2) young children (age 4-7, and 8-10 years old) in order to have a general picture of their experiences during this stage of life. To do so, you may observe and/or chat with the children, and then interview the parents/caregivers in order to collect your data/information.

In exploring their thoughts and experiences, consider it from the three developmental processes you have learnt in this course (i.e., physical, cognitive and socioemotional). You may also want to consider the following points during your data collection:

§  What are some noticeable changes that are taking place, physically, cognitively, and socioemotionally?

§  What is his/her relationship like with his/her parents, siblings, and peers right now?

§  What does he/she feel as important in this stage of life? Is there a different between the children (4-7, 8-10 year olds)? Bear in mind the stage of psychosocial and cognitive development for children of this stage.

§  How does context of development play a part in their childhood?

§  What is the dominant parenting style used by the parents/caregiver?

Your assignment (not more than 2000 words) will be assessed as follows:

1.      Discuss, by comparing and contrasting the experiences of the two (2) children you are researching. In your discussion, include the following:

o   The strategies you have used to collect your data (e.g., some children may have difficulties expressing themselves; in such a case, how would you make inferences of their experiences?).

o   Discussion of the children’s experiences based on the three developmental processes (physical, cognitive, and socioemotional) that you observed.

o   Your own conclusion of the comparison between the children.

(25 marks)

2.      Critically discuss the theories and/or principles you have learnt in the chapters on middle and late childhood (e.g., the physical, cognitive, and socioemotional development). Then, apply these ideas to understand how the developmental processes have contributed to the experiences you have discovered during your interaction with the two children and their parents/caregiver.

(35 marks)

3.      Identify and discuss the most interesting/fascinating things that you have learned from this mini research project. Point out any theories or principles that may be difficult to apply in the Singapore context.

(20 marks)
