There are three major theories of job satisfaction, viz.,- (1) Herzberg’s Motivation-Hygiene theory, (2) Need-fulfillment theory and (3) Social reference-group theory.

As an attitude like all others, Job satisfaction has 3 elements: affective, cognitive and behavioural. It is the emotional response to the job situation. For example “I feel good about my job

The study found that employees identified these five factors as most important:

  • Job security.
  • Benefits (especially health care) with the importance of retirement benefits rising with the age of the employee.
  • Compensation.
  • Opportunities to use skills and abilities.
  • Feeling safe in the work environment.
