Task Description:

This assignment requires you to develop a case study showcasing the international tourism system of an international destination location. You will have selected the location prior to Week 3. The assignment will develop critical thinking, analysis, and literacy skills to synthesise information related to theories studied in this unit.


Instructions

The case study should identify the main issues for the destination and contrast these with concepts from at least ten (10) recent and relevant academic literature sources. Assessment 2 (Annotated Bibliography) will assist with additional literature required. You can draw on other sources to support. Follow the structure and criteria below.

On December 16th, 2016, the National Visitor Survey (NVS) and International Visitor Survey (IVS) data for New South Wales indicate that Sydney was host to at least 9.2 million domestic overnight visitors and over 3.6 million international overnight visitors (Destination NSW, 2017, a). This report is aimed at establishing the factors that make Sydney a popular tourist city. The case study will focus on Sydney as a premier tourist destination not only in New South Wales but also in Australia and the world in the context of whole tourists systems. The case study will carry out secondary research from governmental and non-governmental bodies for statistics related to tourism and academic papers for scholarly discussion on the position of Sydney in tourism.

Analysis of Tourist Visitation in Sydney

Sydney was host to at least 9.2 million domestic overnight visitors and over 3.6 million international overnight visitors (Destination NSW, 2017, a). While the domestic number seems impressive, it should be taken into account that the figure represents a drop of 1.5% from the previous year, while the international tourists’ number was a rise of 13.3% from the past year (Destination NSW, 2017, a). Considering the numbers involved, tourism is an important sector for the Sydney economy. In 2010, Sydney was voted the 42nd most popular tourist destination in the world (Destination NSW, 2017, a). In New South Wales, Sydney was the leading town regarding visitor numbers in 2016. Of all the visitors top New South Wales, Sydney received 93.5% of visitors and 84.7% of nights in 2016 (Destination NSW, 2017, a).
