Nonetheless, we bring our own histories, backgrounds, and experiences to our research. Purpose: Recognize social issues that can be investigated qualitatively Identify researchable questions associated with a social issue Develop a reflexive stance as a researcher Tasks: Make a list of at least 3 issues, topics, or observations about anything having to do with humans and their social lives that you are really curious about. For each one, write a complete sentence about what aspec‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍t(s) of the topic you are curious about it or what about it puzzles you. Choose one of the issues or topics you identified to begin to flesh out a specific question that can be investigated using qualitative. research methods. This is the question you will continue to work over the course of the term, fleshing it out into a full research proposal. In a paragraph or two for each of the following: Explain which group or groups of people are involved in this issue. To the best of your knowledge, how are they involved? Are there different types of people involved? The answers you provide here will help you know who should ask to participate in your research. Explain what you know about where and in what context(s) the issue exists? For example, does it occur in a specific place or type of place? Is it connected to a specific set of activities? Answering this will help you know where you will conduct your research. What are some of the things that you think would be helpful to know about the people involved and the situations in which they experience, cause, or participate in the issue? Write these as questions and identify the ones that you think you would you be able to collect data about? (Be sure to think about data collection as more than interviewing.) Having broken down the issue into smaller questions of who, where, how, when people are involved in this issue, try to formulate a question that seems to be amenable to qualitative social research. For example: Observation – lots of homeless people seem to have pets // Researchable question – What challenges do dogs pose for people without permanent housing? What challenges do dogs help homeless people overcome? In a final paragraph be reflexive about your position as a researcher. Do you have insider knowledge or skills that would help you make contact with the people involved or investigate the issue? How might your gender, ethnicity, personal experiences, or other attributes help or hinder your ability to collect and analyze data. What biases do you have that might affect you as a researcher on this topic‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍?
