Environmental issues: choosing a topic in environmental science that is controversial or poorly understood (some examples: GMOs, nuclear power, overpopulation, climate change, recycling, non-renewable vs renewable energy resource

Environmental issues are often contentious and clouded by opinion and misinformation. The news doesn’t necessarily present unbiased scientific information to help us understand environmental issues. The reasons an issue makes the news are often political, economic etc. Even when it is the environmental or health effects that make an issue noteworthy, we are not often given the scientific background and evidence that would help us understand.

The idea of this assignment is to give you tools for understanding environmental issues and to prepare you for discussing environmental issues with your peers, family and friends. Begin by choosing a topic in environmental science that is controversial or poorly understood (some examples: GMOs, nuclear power, overpopulation, climate change, recycling, non-renewable vs renewable energy resources, sources of pollution, pollution prevention vs cleanup, ocean acidification). Make an argument, based in science, that you could use to convince people around you of the legitimacy of an environmental issue they may or may not have heard about and how it might affect them or other people. This should be written in a way that it presents scientific information on the topic but is still accessible and understandable to the general public.

Write a short essay (500 words or less) addressing an environmental issue as described above. Cite a minimum of 3 peer-reviewed journal articles in your paper. In addition, you may also choose to cite science-based websites (such as epa.gov). Follow basic APA format.

Give your paper an appropriate title, but do not include a title page. Include a list of References at the end. (Do not include References in word count.
