One ethical dilemma that confronts the U.S. healthcare system is the treatment of severely disabled newborns. Should only those infants who have potential for human relationship to be treated, with those whose potential is simply nonexistent or who would be utterly submerged and undeveloped in the mere struggle to survive being allowed to die? Should active euthanasia, the killing of such patient, be acceptable, or should passive euthanasia be allowed?
