You will choose a gaming or sporting community to observe using ethnographic methods (observation, participant observation, interviews, etc.). You will spend a minimum of eight hours doing observational work and conduct substantive, qualitative, semi-structured interviews with at least two people who are part of the community you are observing. I encourage you to supplement your paper with photographs, audio, or other sensorial records. Along with the paper, you will turn in a copy of your field notes, preferably typed up, which should be a minimum of 8 pages double-spaced, along with interview notes. You will upload these to the separate assignment:

Field and Interview Notes. Field and Interview Notes st a note that you’ve completed the assignment or not. And you DO need to turn them in! Keep in mind that you need to turn in a minimum of eight pages of field notes along with interview notes. You scan/photograph your handwritten pages or (preferably) turn in double-spaced typed notes. And don’t worry if they’re messy! That’s how field notes are. It’s in the paper that you reall‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍y make something out of them. What I am looking for in this project:

1)A strict concentration on the data This means none of your own analysis, assumptions, suppositions, etc.

2)A single, central argument that you state up front and follow through your entire piece. Hint: If your question can be answered with a “yes” or “no,” then it’s probably not right for this project.

3)A coherent, logical, easy-to-follow structure.

4)Insightful and appropriate use of your ethnographic data, both observations and interviews.

5)Writing that a general reader can understand. This means doing things like explaining terms and jargon as well as telling the reader why you’re referring to a particular idea, writer, etc.

6)Clear, elegant, concise language.

7)Excellent grammar and spelling. This means using technological tools (grammar check and spell check), but also means reading and re-reading your paper to ensure that it flows properly.

It is always a good idea to have another set of eyes look at your paper. It is also useful to read your paper out loud to yourself—you’ll be surprised what you c‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍atch.
