The purpose of this assignment is to develop your writing skills as they pertain to this course.
As discussed in class, communication is a critical component of organizational effectiveness in all areasof its operations, and as this pertains to you, communication is critical to your personal professionaldevelopment.

In addition to developing your oral and written communication skills, it is important that you be able todiscern the appropriate mode of communication. Some of the factors that impact the mode (how todeliver the message) have to do with the sensitivity of the situation, its criticality and how quickly themessage needs to be relayed and/or responded to; as well as the need to have sufficient, relevant,accurate, and timely documentation, and there could be many other factors.

The three writing assignments were designed with the above in mind. Please use the StudentProfessional Writing Guide that your professor has provided to you in order to complete theassignments that follow.

You are asked to complete all three assignments, building upon the feedback that you receive from yourprofessor. Please refer to the writing rubric to understand how you will be graded.

Assignment 1Recruitment and Selection:

The recruitment and selection process is one of the most important aspects of running new andestablished businesses alike. The right employees can take your business to new heights. The wrongones can hurt business by missing sales, turning customers off and creating a toxic workplaceenvironment.

You are the director of the Marketing Department of a medium size company and you have identified alist of open positions to be filled. Write an e-mail to your companys HR director requesting the hiring ofa new marketing associate. Be sure to include a detailed description of the position, qualifications, payand justify the need for that position and how you intend to fill it.

Assignment 2Compensation and Benefits:

Compensation and benefits are key factors in recruiting and retaining the best talent for any level job inevery industry. Employers know that it is tough to find and keep good talent. You recently had adiscussion with your boss attempting to convince her to invest in your companys employees byproviding them with paid continuing education benefits. Your boss responded to your requesting bysaying what if we invest in our employees and they leave us? and you responded what if we dontand they stay?

Compose an e-mail to your boss detailing a benefits package you intend to provide your employees. Besure to explain your rationale behind your proposal and how it could benefit the company on the longrun.

Assignment 3Performance Appraisal:

A performance appraisal is a systematic, general and periodic process that assesses an individualemployee’s job performance and productivity in relation to certain pre-established criteria andorganizational objectives.

Write two sample appraisals for two of your employees. One reflecting the positive attitude andcontribution of one and the other reflecting the negative attitude and lack of commitment of another
employee. Be sure to write the appraisal in relation to each employees responsibility and include asection titled goals and action plan to set goals for the coming year and action plan to achieve thosegoals.

Assignment 4Dress Code

You are employed in the Human Resources Department at XYG Pharmaceuticals. Your supervisor hasreceived numerous complaints from both clients and staff regarding inappropriate employee attire onFridays and would like to implement a formal dress code. She asks that you draft a detailed memo,similar to the sample provided, that will go out to all staff pertaining to the upcoming changes within thedepartment. Your memo should be one to two paragraphs in length and include the followinginformation:

– Importance of appropriate dress code policy
-Time of implementation- Immediately
-Attire for men-Appropriately fitted dress shirt, dress slacks (or khakis), dress shoes (no sneakers), tie(during meetings) for men, appropriately fitted
-Attire for women-Appropriately fitted dress, skirt, dress pants, appropriately fitted, shoes (no sneakers)-No jeans, torn or baggy pants
-No jogging suits or sweat suits
-No revealing clothing
-No political slogans
-Those who violate policy will be sent home without pay
-Disciplinary actions will be enforced up to and including termination
