Caring for the poor and disenfranchised is of concern for APRNs, educators, and nurses in general. After reviewing the PowerPoint, please add to the discussion the following.

In 2021, the poverty threshold—also known as the poverty line—for an individual was $12,880. For two people, the weighted average entry was $17,420 (Census.gov.,2021).

In 2020, 17.3% of all children (11.9 million kids) lived in Poverty USA—that’s almost 1 in every six children (Census.gov., 2021).

Between 2019 and 2020, the poverty rate increased for non-Hispanic Whites and Hispanics. Among non-Hispanic Whites, 8.2 percent were in poverty in 2020, while Hispanics had a poverty rate of 17.0 percent. Among the major racial groups examined in this report, Blacks had the highest poverty rate (19.5 percent) but did not experience a significant change from 2019. The poverty rate for Asians (8.1 percent) in 2020 was not statistically different from 2019. (Census.gov.,2021).

In addition, every day, thousands of people—working with their neighbors and community—are finding ways out of Poverty USA by strengthening families, creating jobs, and improving neighborhoods.

Formulate and discuss appropriate strategies for working with individuals from various social classes.

There are five social classes:  upper class, upper-middle-class, lower middle class, working-class and lower class. They are determined by different factors, including education, income, and employment.

The culture in which an individual is raised in influences your attitudes, beliefs, values, and behaviors. Two things must occur to provide sensitive and effective care to clients from cultures different from your own. 1. An awareness of your cultural values and beliefs and a recognition of how they influence your attitudes and behaviors. 2. Understanding your client’s cultural values and beliefs and how they influence their attitudes and behaviors. By doing so we can create an environment that will be conducive to the patient. Once there is a generalized understanding of an individual social class, the provider can proceed with the appropriate healthcare for that population. According to Goudreau,2018 regarding population providers must focus not on just the illness but also on prevention, promoting healthier lifestyles, and advancing well-being. Also, healthcare entities are to collaborate with schools, social services, local employers, and public health departments. To boost community and individual well-being will demand providers skilled in systems of care and methods to address upstream factors related to social determinants of health.
