Task Description

It might be suggested that ‘commercial’ hospitality is just an extension of hospitality in the home – do you agree? Discuss, using both academic literature and real world examples.

For this assignment you need to be thinking about what ‘home’ means, not just to you but others. You might begin by thinking about the following questions.

How do ideas of home influence where and how, and to where, tourists travel? How might the tourist’s search for ‘authenticity’ or safety influence accommodation choice? How and why might contemporary forms of commercial accommodation (for example those in the sharing economy) provide opportunites for tourists searching for so called ‘meaningful’ experiences? How might traditional accommodation providers be re-imaging their products and experiences to compete with ‘new’ forms of commercial accommodation?

Possible solution:

The ‘commercial’ hospitality industry is indeed an extension of the hospitality that is offered at home due to a number of facets that render both types of hospitality similar notwithstanding the differences. The hospitality industry is one of the oldest industries in the world (Ogbonna & Harris, 2002). While the concept has evolved significantly from the time it was first started, the core concepts remain the same while approaches differ slightly depending on trends. In common usage hospitality relates to the association between a host and their guest as the host takes in the guest with willingness. Commercial hospitality differs from hospitality in the home by the fact that commercial hospitality has the money factor involved. In home hospitality, services are offered with a social perspective while commercial hospitality has a financial aspect of the visitor reciprocating financially the host for their services. I therefore agree with the statement that the ‘commercial’ hospitality industry is an extension of the hospitality that is offered at home.

A commons saying goes that hospitality begins at home. Not only does the saying describe the social ties that exist between people, but also exemplifies the state of the hospitality industry. Kant states in his 1795 paper “Perpetual Peace: A Philosophical Sketch,” that is also the foundation for the United Nation’s Declaration of Human Rights, that hospitality is a universal right for the stranger and is based on the right of association and self-preservation that is a core aspect of the laws of society (Shryock, 2008). By nature according to Kant, humans are strangers who move from place to place away from the familiar and are met by the need for association. As a result, individuals require hospitality where they go because the alternative according to Kant is waging war. Based on this argument, the nature of hospitality is justified and indicates the core similarity of home and commercial hospitality….
