You are encouraged to use assignment outputs that you may have developed from previous assignments and units, as examples in the appendix of your essay.

Task

Your task is to consider the domains above and write an ESSAY illustrating and explaining continuous improvement plan for one case study.

Your plan must explain and justify itself within the context of the case study using the unit and peer reviewed material. You are encouraged to review Kerzner Chapter 21 and the PMI Managing Change in Organizations for an indication of the context and content of your plan.

Waterfall methodology is the most commonly used project management tool by most project managers in planning and execution of the work in software development and construction projects. In water fall methodology the scope of the project is defined initially and time required for specific and required resources to deliver the primary deliverables at scheduled milestones are clearly planned (Kerzner 2002). Waterfall approach is also called as traditional approach for project management.

            The waterfall method is linear and sequential process which has distinctive goals in each phase (Charvat 2003). As the water falls from the cliff, it cannot go back, it is the same with waterfall methodology. Once the phase process and development is completed there is no turning back, turning back results in increase in costs and changes in the design and planning. The phase is followed by next development phase until the completion of the project.

            The advantages of the waterfall methodology are that allows managerial control and departmentalization. A schedule is developed with each stage of development and the result can have processed to development process. Every key aspect is documented and verified by the important stakeholders of the project to proceed with the next stage of the process. The process adapts to shifting terms (Crawford 2005). The design of project will be in detailed and effective with engagement of key stakeholders of the project. Forces the structured organization, the methodology will alert every person included in the project to deliver the task at the given time as the same it is to be delivered as a deliverable. Change management is an efficient process, in which the process allows early design change. The methodology is well suited for milestone-focused development. With clear, concrete, and well understood stages that everyone on the team can understand and prepare for taking down the task in clear and concise manner. The milestone approach and scheduled timeline are the important processes in the waterfall methodology.

            The disadvantages with this type of methodology is project management are that it will not much allow for reflection or revision (Charvat 2003). Every stage is detailed and structured with detailed documentation. Change in the process will result in increase of costs on the project and work burden, and extension of time for the project completion. The effective alternatives to the waterfall model are agile model, spiral model, rapid development methodology etc. Rolling back to the previous stages and changing the environment is a hurdle as it disturbs the entire planning and scheduling and which is considered as the major risk.

Justification of the methodology with case study:

            As the present case study involved in engineering and construction industry, the suitable method for dealing with project is to choose waterfall methodology. The sponsor is intimated with the specific requirements and importance of the project to the sponsor. A sequence and detailed process are involved in each stage of the project management process (Meredith & Mantel 2011). It provides accountability, cost reduction, reduces time in completion of work. The strategies in adapting the methodology for project management will enhance the outcome of the project and effective results are shown on successful verification and change management at every early stage of the process.…….
