I‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍n the third major assignment of the course, we’ll shift fully into the realm of expository writing and research based writing, as this is representative of the majority of writing you’ll do at the college level. In addition, you’ll also be writing in a persuasive fashion using research, which is a skill needed in professional settings. For the third assignment, you will put together a Proposal that identifies a problem faced by GBC or another local community and then identifies, proposes and justifies a solution to that problem. In essence, then, the proposal has two key purposes: to inform people (about a problem and its solution) and persuade them (that the problem requires attention and the solution will work). These are two key purposes for writing in both academic and professional settings, and this assignment will get you started on both. ‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍ In addition, this project will require you to complete research on the problem and solution, use it to justify the claims made in your proposal, and make use of a citation style such as MLA or APA depending on your audience. Specifically, your proposal must: Identify a specific problem faced by GBC or another local community Provide a researched and complete explanation of the problem Provide a solution to address the problem Persuade readers that the solution will be effective using researched information and data Describe the process of implementing the solutions Effectively address its target audience, namely the people you are calling to action Use conventions and features of the Proposal genre Use at least 5 sources and cite them appropriately in APA or MLA style The proposal should run no less than six pages (at least 1500 words)‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍.
