Social Issue/Problem and Policy Identification


This assignment requires the analysis of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). You will have to discuss the values that are involved in the policy and its relationship to human rights as well as its effectiveness in addressing the specific problem. Refer to the United Declaration of Human Rights. 

You are required to discuss the problems and how well the policy addresses it.

For all papers, students should follow the 7th edition APA guidelines for paper formatting, writing style, bias free language, citation and reference lists. Accordingly, your papers

should be typed and double-spaced on standard-sized paper (8.5″ x 11″), with 1″ margins on all

sides. You are required to use 12 pt. Times New Roman font. 

Papers are to be 7-8 pages. Points will be deducted for spelling and grammatical errors. At least 7 references must be used. References must be peer-reviews articles, journals, books, or governmental websites or organizations. One of the references must include the required textbook:

The following sections in bold should be the headings in the paper. All questions should be answered seamlessly in paragraph form under each heading. 

1. Introduction (4-5 sentences) of (“what” PROBLEM) and discuss (“why” and “how” POLICY)

a. Identify a social issue/problem

b. How many are affected? What specific groups are impacted? c. What are the effects of the problem/issue?

d. What is the present perspective on this problem?


3. History of social issue/problem

a. What is the history of this particular problem? When was it first identified? How

has it been viewed historically?

b. What specific human rights are impacted by this problem?

c. Discuss the values and interests (economic, political, cultural) that have influenced

the perception of the problem

d. How have these perspectives changed and what might have caused these changes?

e. What groups have been influential in the response to the problem?

f. How has social work responded to the problem?


4. Policy Dealing with Issue

a. What are the goals of the policy with regards to this problem?

b. How does the present policy view eligibility? What benefits are offered? Are benefits

sufficient to meet needs?

c. What gaps do you see in the current policy?

d. How does the policy respond to the oppression of specific groups?

e. Are there any unintended consequences of the policy?

f. What have been the outcomes?

g. How does the policy relate to human rights….is it supportive or unsupportive?

Explain your view.

h. How is the policy funded? Are funds sufficient to make it effective?

i. Overall, how effective is the policy in solving the specific social problem?
