Assignment Description: craft a compelling analytical argument. For this essay, you will choose a text from our reading list— “Hills Like White Elephants” by E. Hemingway – and decide upon a feature of the text you want to analyze – repetition(literary device to be used) Your goal for this essay is to craft an argument about an element of your chosen text that falls within one of the five categories (remember we make arguments by offering specific interpretations of texts). For example, if you are interested in the repeated use of cat imagery in “Big Me,” you could pose an argument about the meaning of this particular repetition and how it serves the story as a whole. Be sure to utilize quotes and “non-quotes” from the text itself to defend your argument In addition, you must choose one or two secondary sources not on our syllabus to engage with in your analysis. (“Engage with” = address that writer’s ideas and respond in a meaningful way with your own analysis, not just name-drop or quote a line from the source.) . Your source could take the form of: • Someone else’s published analysis of your chosen text • An interview with or article by the author in which the text is discussed and/or interpreted • An interview with or article by the author in which a relevant theme is discussed • An article about a specific topic that is relevant to your specific argument Requirements: Your essay should be at least 1400 words.
