Two Sociological Theories Applied to a Current Event

Students will turn in a 600 to 800-word paper, in which they will apply two concepts from the work of one of the theories studied for the mid-term to a news event of their choice. To choose a news item, students will go to one of the news sites listed below. The term “news story” is defined broadly. You don’t have to limit yourself to the headlines. You can choose any item from the current edition. It can come from the business section, sports, arts, science, etc. The only off-limit section is the source’s archives. You must use a current item, because the point of this exercise is to see how sociological theory can help us to understand current, not past, events. As you select a news item, you should think about a theory that you can relate to it. Once you have selected both the news story and the theory, it is time to write the paper. It should include a brief summary of the news story, a brief overview of the theory with a definition of the two concepts, and an explanation of the connection the student sees between the theory and the news story. The only sources that are allowed for this assignment are the news story itself and the textbook. Both should be referenced properly in ASA format, both in the text of the paper and in a reference list. The text book is: Turner, Jonathan. 2014. Theoretical Sociology: A Concise Introduction to Twelve Sociological Theories. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage (CNN International)
