Requirements (topic, format, & length) “Why do I have to take this course? When will I ever use this?” If you haven’t said it yourself, then you’ve probably heard it said by a classmate. I could give you the standard reply about how the topic is applicable to your major or how a well-educated person should have a basic knowledge of the subject, but your assignment is to justify the course yourself. To satisfy the writing component for this course, you must submit an essay that includes all the following elements (10 points each): A positive explanation of why this course is included in your curriculum Your strategies for passing the course Your expectations for the course (Other than just the credit toward graduation, what do you hope to gain from the course?) Suggested for inclusion are the following: A recounting of your experience from previous courses in mathematics How you have seen course topics applied—in a job, on TV, at home, in a newspaper, etc. How the topics in the course are applicable to your chosen major The role of mathematics in a well-rounded education and/or in the development of analytical thinking There is no required format for the essay. The body of the essay must contain 500-1000 words. Any heading, images, and equations will not be included in the word count, and you are not required to include a works cited page (which will also be excluded from the word count if provided).
